Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this disaster.

But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a groan.

After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the nature of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?

Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

Catastrophe of Epic Proportions

The volcanic eruption struck with devastating force, destroying entire cities in its wake. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the chaos that erupted was deafening. It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
